Founder and Patron Prof. Dr. Mohammed Nurul Alam


Dr. Mohammed Nurul Alam is a Professor of Accounting at Yorkville University in Toronto, Canada. He holds a Ph.D. in "Small Business Finance by Islamic Banks" from Lund University in Sweden. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Commerce with Honours, a Master’s Degree in Accounting, and completion of a Chartered Accounting Course (CACC).
Dr. Alam's teaching journey dates back to 1976, encompassing various roles and experiences worldwide. He has taught accounting to CPA students in Nairobi, Kenya, and collaborated with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) as a Lecturer in Accounting & Finance at the Kenya Institute of Administration (KIA), Nairobi, Kenya. Additionally, he served as an Assistant Professor in Accounting and worked as Dean of the Commerce Faculty at Islamic University, Bangladesh.
He had the privilege of coordinating the Federal Government Project, 'Fresh Start,' funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Canada. This project involved teaching women in the Region of Peel how to start small home-based businesses.
Dr. Alam worked as an Assistant Professor in Accounting at Sultan Qaboos University in the Sultanate of Oman. He also held the position of Associate Professor at Canadian University in Dubai, UAE, where he taught Managerial Accounting to MBA students in the Department of Business Administration. His international experiences further include being a SIDA (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency) Research Fellow at Lund University, where he conducted research and taught courses to MBA students related to Banking in Southeast Asian nations and International Marketing.
He served as a visiting professor at Trisakti University in West Jakarta, Indonesia, in the Department of Islamic Economics and Finance. There, he developed and taught a PhD course on Small Business Finance by Islamic Banks and Networking. Dr. Alam conducted his PhD research by visiting Islamic banks globally, traveling to several Middle Eastern countries such as Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, as well as Sudan, Turkey, Northern Cyprus, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
Dr. Alam has an extensive academic and research background, having presented his work on "Small Entrepreneurs Finance by Islamic Banks" at international conferences in over 20 countries. His research contributions are well-recognized, with numerous articles published in prestigious international journals. Among his published works, the book "Empowering Small Entrepreneurs by Islamic Banks," released in 2009 and available on Amazon, stands out as a significant contribution to the field.
Continuing his academic journey, Dr. Alam remains deeply engaged in teaching and scholarly writing. He is currently anticipating the publication of his latest book, "Islamic Banking: Financial Practices," which delves into the complexities of Riba and other financial practices within Islamic banking. In addition to his teaching and writing commitments, Dr. Alam is actively involved in producing research articles and presenting them at international conferences. His most recent presentation was at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, where he discussed the role of Islamic banks in financing small businesses in Kenya.

If he were to describe himself in one word, it would be "wanderlust." As Shakespeare once said, "The world is my oyster." Dr. Alam has had the privilege of traveling to over 42 countries and looks forward to sharing his passion for learning and diverse experiences through this book.
